The Italian President on Saturday marked Liberation Day, the anniversary of the end of the Nazi occupation in Italy. According to Associated Press Italian President Sergio Mattarella stood in silent contemplation at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Rome in front of a wreath of flowers placed there by two presidential guards. The president was accompanied by Defence Minister Guido Crosetto and the Speakers of the Chambers, Ignazio La Russa and Lorenzo Fontana. At the end of the ceremony, Mattarella travelled to San Severino Marche in central Italy.
In 2022 the President awarded the Gold Medal for Civil Merit to the town in recognition of its contribution to the partisan struggle and for the shelter it provided to hundreds of displaced persons during the war.
