The possibility of providing Ukraine with JASSM precision-guided cruise missiles was discussed twice—in the summer of 2024 and the summer of 2025. Each time, the Kremlin warned of a "threat of escalation." What features of JASSM missiles make them an "unpleasant surprise" for the Russians?
JASSM is at the center of a future "kinetic missile war," in which air forces will not engage in dogfights but will instead launch long-range, precision-guided cruise missile strikes. The United States has high hopes for its JASSM, the Joint Air-to-Surface Missile, says The National Security Journal.
This ultra-fast air-launched cruise missile delivers powerful strikes, forcing the enemy to seek cover. There is also a longer-range version and a ship-killing model—the latter called the LRASM or Long-Range Anti-Ship Missile. JASSM and its variants can be launched from a wide range of combat aircraft, from fighters to bombers. The missile can be launched by B-2, B-52, F-15, F-16, and F/A-18 fighters. The new F-35s will also eventually carry LRASM. The F-22s have also used the basic JASSM model against targets in Syria. The JASSM cruise missile is 4.2 meters long and has a wingspan of 2.4 meters. It is equipped with a WDU-42/B penetrating warhead weighing 453 kg.
Various versions of the missile use turboprop or turbojet engines. The baseline JASSM model has a range of 368 km, while the extended-range "ER" model has a combat radius of up to 1,000 kilometers. JASSM has been in service since 2009 and is used by Poland, Australia, Finland and the United States. JASSM was developed in 1998 and first tested in 2006. "JASSM has a stealthy airframe designed to engage a variety of targets, including enemy air defenses. The missile’s stealthy airframe is especially important given the proliferation of advanced air defense systems, such as the S-300 and newer variants. Finally, the JASSM-ER will be equipped with a datalink, allowing for post-launch course corrections. This is a critical improvement for land and sea targets," CSIS writes. There’s also an extreme-range model, which entered service in 2024 and has a range of 1,800 km. These new variants feature improved engines and a larger fuel capacity. Their warheads can penetrate to greater depths, disintegrating into multiple fragments. The JASSM is equipped with an infrared seeker and is guided by an internal navigation system and GPS, The National Security Journal reports.
"It also includes 3D target models, eight of which can be stored in each missile’s memory. The Air Force states that the missile has an accuracy of 3 meters (CEP)," CSIS states.
The first combat use of JASSMs occurred in 2018, carried out by two B-1B Lancer bombers. The missiles struck the Barzah Research Center in Syria, aiming to destroy a chemical weapons production facility located there. A total of 19 JASSMs were launched to destroy the facility.
JASSM was also used in the 2019 mission to destroy the home of ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi . One interesting use of JASSM is its deployment on the MC-130J Commando aircraft. The "Rapid Dragon" launch system is particularly dangerous to militants on the ground.
The US Marine Corps is already deploying JASSM on its F/A-18 Hornet aircraft. Marine Attack Squadron 232 (VMFA) became the first Marine unit to receive the cruise missiles.
