Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko called President Zelensky at the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion and apologized. Zelensky stated this in an interview with the Belarusian publication. "Zerkalo".
Thus, according to Zelensky, in the first days of the full-scale Russian invasion, he called Lukashenko.
"In response to my words that they are aggressors and allies of Russia, and are being drawn into the war because missiles were flying from your territory and troops were entering, Lukashenko claimed to me on the phone that he was not in control of this situation and said: "If you want, you can respond to us, strike Mozyr, an oil refinery in Belarus. My team and I discussed this—everyone wanted to respond. But, in my opinion, that’s all Putin was waiting for—for us to strike at that moment. Back then, he really wanted the Belarusians to be able to approach from that direction with their troops. We’re not saying the Belarusian Armed Forces had significant forces or capabilities there, but still. We had to think about how to defend ourselves from that side," the president said.
Lukashenko also apologized and was very afraid that there would be retaliatory measures, according to the head of state. Zelensky believes that Russia dragged Belarus into the war for only one reason."When they were pressuring us in the east, and their main troop concentration was there, they wanted to stretch our forces along the front line. One of the ideas was for the Belarusians to start invading Ukrainian territory with some manpower to intimidate us. In that case, we would certainly have to respond and redeploy some troops. And that would have weakened the east," he explained. Zelensky noted that Russia was attempting to draw Belarus into the war to force Ukraine to disperse its forces and weaken the eastern sector, where the main Russian forces were concentrated. In the event of attacks on Belarusian territory, Kyiv would have been forced to redeploy some units to defend its northern border.
Now, according to the president, Russia continues to exploit Belarusian territory for its own interests. He also noted that Minsk’s current position is deliberate, and illusions about a "new stage" in relations with the West do not guarantee security for the Belarusian authorities. Volodymyr Zelenskyy commented on the recently imposed sanctions against Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko. Zelenskyy noted that this is only the first step. "We will monitor all military assistance he provides. We did not raise Lukashenko’s issue with the Americans because we saw that the Americans were determined to reach a solution through diplomatic means" Zelenskyy clarified. "He supports the Russian regime—not just Russia’s geopolitics, but its war and assistance in killing civilians. We have evidence of this. It’s all on maps, videos, everything has been recorded—how shahids entered Belarus through repeaters," Volodymyr Zelenskyy added.
