Ukraine continues to increase production of its own long-range missiles and successfully deploys them against military targets of the Russian occupiers. How will the increased production of Ukrainian Flamingo missiles impact the course of the military operations and Ukraine’s position on the front lines?

Charter97 media outlet spoke with retired Ukrainian Armed Forces Colonel, military expert, and pilot instructor Roman Svitan about this.

“Well, you have to take some of the news reports with a grain of salt. The thing is, the Flamingo isn’t a simple missile; it’s quite a heavy one. Only a few have been produced, most likely in pre-production, and it’s undergoing field testing. Why, in principle, send it to the Russians? It’s better to conduct combat testing, which is exactly what they’re sending it now. For it to quickly get into production and produce 200 units a month—I wouldn’t say that’s even possible; that’s too high a figure. Why? Because we produce one Neptune missile a week—we’ve been doing this for several years now, and the performance of a missile like the Flamingo depends on the engine. It’s not like that—the warhead isn’t a problem: you can take, say, the FAB-500, a simple high-explosive aerial bomb, then encase it in a body, add a wing, and a control system. The issue is the engine. The engine used for this missile is the AI-25T; there are still a few hundred of them, let’s say, but if we produce 200 per month, these engines will run out in six months. Reproducing them, that is, restarting production to produce that many engines—200 per month—is practically impossible. There are specific limits for these engines. Therefore, I think if various missiles are produced, there could be 200 missiles in total across all types. I’m willing to believe that this could include the Palyanitsya and Pekalo—we have various missiles, and all 200 could, in principle, be calculated. But producing 200 Flamingos per month specifically—that’s currently unrealistic”, Roman Svitan added.

He said that it’s possible to use these missiles, say, in large numbers—perhaps in a combined attack with drones and other missiles—so that they could penetrate Russian air defenses, hiding between, say, decoy drones or decoy missiles. “Then they would truly be capable of this, given their range, because they should probably have a minimum range of 1,000 to 1,500 kilometers. At least, the Russians are now confirming this range: they’ve disassembled several missiles, or rather, already destroyed, so they’re showing roughly that this missile can fly up to 1,500 kilometers. What is 1,500 kilometers? Practically to the Urals—about 2,000 kilometers to the Urals; that’s a large portion of European Russia, which this missile could cover.
