Mexican authorities arrested Monday a senior figure of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel in an operation in northwestern Mexico, marking a new blow to one of the country’s most powerful criminal groups. According to Associated Press Audias Flores Silva, known as "El Jardinero," was detained in the state of Nayarit during a special forces operation led by the Mexican Navy, according to federal Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch. Flores Silva, 45, had been identified as a regional leader of the cartel and was wanted by the United States, which had offered a $5 million reward for information leading to his capture. Authorities said he previously served as head of security for cartel leader Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as "El Mencho," and later took on operational control in several states, including Nayarit, Jalisco, Mexico state, and Zacatecas. His activities allegedly included overseeing the production and trafficking of methamphetamine, managing clandestine laboratories, and involvement in fuel theft operations. The arrest comes two months after Mexican forces captured and killed Oseguera Cervantes in February during a military operation in the town of Tapalpa, in Jalisco state. Following the cartel leader’s death, violence surged across roughly 20 Mexican states, leaving more than 70 people dead, including 25 National Guard members. Some media reports had suggested Flores Silva could emerge as a potential successor to lead the criminal organization after Oseguera Cervantes’ death. The United States had sought Flores Silva’s extradition since 2021 on charges including organized crime and firearms possession, and later issued an international alert through the Drug Enforcement Administration.
Flores Silva previously served five years in prison in the United States for drug trafficking before returning to Mexico, where he was arrested again in 2016 in connection with an ambush against police in Jalisco, though he was released three years later. Authorities have not yet disclosed further details about the charges he may face in Mexico following his latest arrest.
