For several months, there has been speculation in Poland about a conflict within Law and Justice between two factions, one associated with former PM Mateusz Morawiecki, and the other with Przemysław Czarnek, whom Law and Justice leader Jarosław Kaczyński recently named as a candidate for prime minister in the 2027 parliamentary elections.
Tensions within Law and Justice are becoming increasingly visible, as Mateusz Morawiecki expands his political activity beyond the party line. Morawiecki has recently registered a new organization, called the Growth Plus Association.
The party leadership fears that the new platform is a rival in waiting, designed to fight for the centrist conservative ground and hollow out Law and Justice from within before 2027.
What Morawiecki’s move crystallizes is something that has been building for the better part of two years – the party that once dominated the Polish right has watched that dominance dissolve and has not yet found a coherent answer to what comes next.
