Russian capital Moscow faced drone threats on the night leading to April 3. Two drones were intercepted and downed by air defence systems over the city, according to Russian media and statements from Mayor Sergey Sobyanin. Sobyanin shared updates via Telegram, stating that military air defenses had successfully shot down a drone approaching the capital, with emergency crews dispatched to the crash site to handle the debris. Roughly an hour later, he reported that a second drone had also been neutralized. As a precaution, authorities temporarily suspended incoming and outgoing flights at two airports – Vnukovo in Moscow and Tunoshna in Yaroslavl – due to concerns over possible aerial threats. Residents in Moscow took to online platforms to describe hearing air defense activity during the night, with some reacting in alarm and frustration. The Leningrad region also came under drone threat as more than 20 aerial vehicles were intercepted and shot down. Authorities in Russia’s Leningrad region say an industrial area in Kirishi came under a drone strike, with the target identified as the Kirishi oil refinery. The confirmation was given by the regional governor, Alexander Drozdenko. Meanwhile, residents online have reported hearing explosions in Vyborg, also within the same region, which they attribute to air defense systems being activated. Images shared on social media appear to show the sky lit up in red over the area, allegedly as a result of the attack. Friday’s incident in Moscow follows a similar event on March 21, when Rusisan air defense forces may have mistakenly downed a small aircraft near Kolomna in the Moscow region, resulting in the deaths of those on board. Earlier in March, on the 14th, Sobyanin had already spent hours updating the public about efforts to counter drone activity aimed at the capital. Ukraine has increasingly carried out drone strikes deep inside Russian territory, signaling a shift toward targeting infrastructure and strategic locations far from the front lines. In several recent incidents, drones have approached or been intercepted near Moscow, underscoring the growing reach of these operations. These attacks have not been limited to the capital. Various regions across Russia, including industrial zones and energy facilities, have been targeted, contributing to a broader pattern of disruption. One notable consequence has been the intermittent suspension of flights at major airports. In Moscow, operations at Vnukovo Airport have been temporarily halted during drone alerts, while similar restrictions have affected other airports such as Tunoshna in Yaroslavl. These precautionary measures are intended to reduce risks to civilian aviation during periods of heightened aerial threat. The repeated need to close airspace highlights how drone warfare is affecting daily life within Russia, particularly in and around major urban centers. Residents have reported hearing air defense systems in action during the night, while authorities continue to emphasize that most drones are intercepted before reaching their intended targets. Overall, these strikes illustrate both the expanding scope of Ukrainian drone capabilities and the resulting strain on Russian air defenses and infrastructure.
