Moscow: First Deputy Head of Russia’s GRU Wounded

On the morning of February 6, an attack was carried out in Moscow on the first deputy head of the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation (GRU).

Russia’s Investigative Committee reported the incident.

The attack on Lieutenant General Vladimir Alexeyev took place on the 24th floor of a building on Volokolamskoye Highway.

It is reported that the hitman fired several shots at the man as he was leaving his apartment.

“Residents heard gunshots and cries for help. Later, they saw the lieutenant general himself covered in blood; he remained conscious for some time,” Russian media report.

After that, the attacker fled the scene. It is currently known that the Russian lieutenant general was hospitalized with gunshot wounds.

Vladimir Alexeyev has served as head of the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation since 2011.

According to the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine, he was born on April 24, 1961, in the village of Holodky, the Vinnytsia region, Ukraine.

In 1984, he graduated from the Ryazan Higher Airborne Command School named after V. F. Margelov.

He later served as head of intelligence directorates in Russia’s Moscow and Far Eastern military districts. Subsequently, he was appointed head of the 14th Directorate of the GRU of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces.

As reported by Astra, in 2023, during the so-called ‘Prigozhin mutiny,’ Alexeyev released a video address to fighters of the Wagner Private Military Company.

He called on them to abandon further actions and took part in negotiations with PMC leader Yevgeny Prigozhin.
