The most active volcano in the Philippines began to rumble again on Saturday. According to Associated Press the Mayon Volcano in the northeastern province of Albay spewed a cloud of ash and debris sky high.
At the same time, authorities detected pyroclastic currents or flows — fast-moving avalanches of super-hot rock fragments, ash and gas. The eruption caused heavy ash fall, blanketing parts of Albay and darkening the sky in several areas. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said the alert level remained at 3, based on its latest 24-hour monitoring.
This status indicates intensified unrest or magmatic activity, raising the likelihood of further hazardous eruptions. The 2,462-meter volcano is one of the Philippines’ top tourism draws because of its near-perfect cone shape. But it’s also the most active of the country’s 24 restive volcanoes.
An eruption in 1814 killed about 1,200 people, including many who sought refuge in a church about 13 kilometers from the crater. Mild rumblings earlier this year prompted the evacuation of thousands of villagers from a danger zone on its foothills.
