At least 18 top managers connected to Russia’s largest companies have died under suspicious or unclear circumstances since 2022. The cause of death in the majority of these deaths have been cited as suicide by Russian authorities. Among those are executives at major firms such as Gazprom, Lukoil, Novatek, and Transneft. Many of the deaths involve falls from windows, gunshot wounds, or sudden unexplained deaths at home or abroad.
On January 14, after a week-long search in Cyprus, Vladislav Baumgertner, a prominent businessman and former head of Uralkali, who had gone missing a week earlier, on January 7, was found dead. His body was so disfigured that DNA testing would be required to confirm his identity. Police were quick to declare that "there’s a body, but no case"—Baumgertner had simply suffered an "accident."
According to the official version, the businessman went climbing on the coastal cliffs near Limassol. There, due to a failure to observe safety precautions, he fell and died.
Baumgertner’s name was most prominent in Russia in 2013. In August of that year, he was detained in Minsk and accused of causing damage to Belaruskali. A serious Russian-Belarusian scandal erupted. The businessman spent over a year in a Minsk pretrial detention center and was released to Russia only in November 2014.
Not everyone in Russia believes that Baumgertner simply went for a walk on the rocks and fell on his own. The fact is, he’s already the 18th top manager at a Russian company to die since 2022—as if some kind of plague had broken out among them. The Telegram channel "Multinational. Economy" quips: "A tragic accident, no one to blame. Nothing unusual, let’s move on." Then it lists the previous 17 cases:

1. Leonid Shulman – Gazprom Invest. Found in the bathtub.
2. Alexander Tyulyakov – Gazprom. Dead in the garage.
3. Vladislav Avaev– Gazprombank. Shot dead along with his family.
4. Sergey Protosenya– Novatek. Found with his family in Spain.
5. Alexander Subbotin – Lukoil. Died at a shaman’s.
6. Yuri Voronov – Gazprom contractor. Shot dead in a swimming pool.
7. Ravil Maganov – Lukoil. Fell out of a window.
8. Pavel Pchelnikov– Russian Railways. Suicide on the balcony.
9. Pavel Antov– Member of Parliament. Fell in India.
10. Ivan Pechorin– state corporation. Drowned near Russky Island.
2023
11. Kristina Baykova – "Loco-Bank". Fell from the 11th floor.
12. Vyacheslav Rovneyko – Urals Energy. Dead on Rublyovka.
13. Igor Shkurko – Yakutskenergo. He died in a pre-trial detention center.
14. Vladimir Nekrasov – Lukoil. Heart after a binge.
2024
15. Vitaly Robertus – Lukoil. Suicide in the office.
16. Mikhail Rogachev – ONEXIM. Fell from the 10th floor.
