Residents of a town in Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley walked among the rubble and looked in disbelief at the vast destruction from overnight clashes that left 16 dead and 35 wounded in Nabi Chit, according to Lebanon’s Health Ministry.
An Israeli special force landed in eastern Lebanon overnight in search of information about a navigator who has been missing for nearly 40 years.
The Israeli military said Saturday that they did not find his remains.
For decades, Israel has been trying to find out what happened to Ron Arad. His fate remains unknown after he was captured alive by local gunmen shortly after he parachuted from his fighter jet, which crashed in Lebanon while attacking suspected Palestinian militants in 1986 on the edge of the southern port city of Sidon.
The Israeli military did not say where the force landed in Lebanon but the Lebanese army and state media said an Israeli commando force landed on the mountains along the border with Syria before heading to the eastern town of Nabi Chit where they clashed with Hezbollah and local fighters.
The Lebanese army said three soldiers were killed in the exchange of fire in Nabi Chit, adding that the landing was conducted by two Israeli helicopters.
It said that residents clashed with the Israeli force while Lebanese troops went on alert and fired light bombs.
“There is a major question mark regarding the entry of Israeli helicopters… What is the responsibility of the security agencies? The Lebanese army?” said Nabi Chit reisdent Mohammad Mousa.
Another resident of Nabi Chit told The Associated Press that the Israeli force entered the town and dug a grave in a cemetery before it left.
He had no further details.
The Israeli army’s Arabic spokesman Avichay Adraee posted on X that the force did not find any evidence related to Arad whose captors released several photos of him in the months that followed his capture.
Adraee also said that no remains of Arad were found during the operation.
