This episode of Ukraine This Week, we were joined by Oleksandr Merezhko, Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee in the Ukrainian Parliament, to discuss the finally approved €90 billion EU package and its significance for strengthening both Ukraine’s economy and defense.
Merezhko stressed that Ukraine remains a “shield of Europe” and that sustained international military assistance is essential to protect civilians and address ongoing funding gaps. On Russia, he highlighted that targeting oil and gas revenues through sanctions is one of the most effective ways to weaken its war machine and increase pressure for negotiations.
He also argued that Europe must play a direct role in any peace process, while warning against legitimizing Vladimir Putin, described as a war criminal. Finally, he underscored Ukraine’s expectation that EU accession talks will move forward through the opening of negotiation clusters, framing integration as both a security imperative and a driver of democratic reform.
