The command of the Russian Armed Forces units in the Zaporizhzhia sector is not allowing their wounded soldiers to recover and heal. Instead, they are sent on reconnaissance missions.
This is how Russian commanders save food, according to the Ukrainian partisan movement "Atesh."
"In the Zaporizhzhia area, wounded soldiers are being sent to identify enemy positions," the statement said.
It is noted that agent "Atesh," who serves in the 247th Guards Airborne Assault Regiment in the Zaporizhzhia region, provided information that wounded Russian Armed Forces soldiers are being sent on reconnaissance missions to locate Ukrainian Armed Forces positions.
"There’s no evacuation from the battlefield, so a wound is fatal in any case. Under these conditions, the Russian command doesn’t want to waste resources and provisions on the wounded, who won’t survive anyway," Atesh noted. The partisans also emphasized that in cases where a wounded Russian soldier refuses to go on reconnaissance, he faces execution.
"Reconnaissance in force" is often conducted without weapons or equipment. A wounded soldier is either killed by the enemy or by his own people," Atesh noted.
Recall, The Russian military is sending wounded troops on crutches back to the frontlines to fight, and redeploying soldiers with significant injuries to combat roles, as it struggles with growing manpower issues. The use of wounded soldiers is a sign that Moscow is managing its growing manpower issues without a wider, general mobilisation, which would be unpopular among Russia’s urban middle classes. A Ukrainian defense intelligence official said they had noticed the trend in wounded Russian soldiers appearing in “active combat areas” over the last six months. He attributed the use of the wounded as a bid by commanders to hide losses and their inability to get troops in and out of combat areas when needed. Recently, much online dissatisfaction has been directed at the latest presidential decree, which reduced one-off payments for minor injuries from 3 to 1 million rubles. Compensation for other even less severe injuries can no longer exceed 100,000 rubles.
There have been complaints on VKontakte that doctors are playing down injuries. Former mercenaries of the private Wagner Group, one of the most brutal units to fight on Russia’s side, have also complained that the Russian state does not recognize them as being participants in the war against Ukraine. Former Russian military officer Nikita Tretyakov wrote on his Telegram channel that war invalids often faced unemployment because few people wanted to hire them. He described the case of a former soldier who had been severely wounded and was refused the position of sales advisor. He had been told at the interview that there was concern for his mental state because he had participated in the war in Ukraine.
According to the sociologist Anna Kuleshova, there are major differences in attitudes towards veterans in Russian society. This was partly due to the political polarization of the population, she told DW, but there were also regional differences: "War invalids are not seen as heroes by everyone but are also viewed with suspicion because people are aware from the news as well as from personal experience that there are cases of military people using violence against civilians."
