European leaders were meeting over the Russia-Ukraine war and a U.S. peace proposal to end the fighting on the sidelines of a summit with African leaders in Luanda, Angola.
According to Associated Press European officials have expressed cautious optimism after discussions on the peace proposals for Ukraine, and said Monday that the talks, held in Switzerland, were a step forward but warned that the path to peace remains long.
"While work remains to be done, there is now a solid basis for moving forward," European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said at a news conference in Luanda alongside European Council President Antonio Costa.
The U.S. plan, which initially favored Russia’s demands, has been modified.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz welcomed the changes but emphasized that peace won’t come overnight.
"This is a laborious process," he said in Luanda.
"It will move forward at most in smaller steps this week. I do not expect there to be a breakthrough this week.”
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said diplomacy has been reinvigorated.
However, the grim reality of war continues, with Russian drones killing four people in Kharkiv.
The situation remains tense as efforts for peace progress slowly.
