Norway deployed two F-35 Lightning II jets on the evening of April 13 to intercept a Russian Ilyushin Il-38, the country’s media reported on Monday. According to Harstad Tidende, citing military sources, the aircraft were launched within minutes from Evenes Air Station under NATO’s Quick Reaction Alert, QRA, protocol after the Russian plane was detected approaching the country’s airspace. The mission aimed to identify and document the aircraft, and civilian air traffic in the area was temporarily held during the operation. The QRA system is part of NATO’s broader Air Policing framework, where interceptor jets monitor and respond to unidentified or approaching aircraft. Once identified, such planes are typically escorted away from NATO-controlled airspace or guided toward landing if necessary. These types of encounters have been routine for decades, often occurring when military aircraft enter another country’s Air Defense Identification Zone, a buffer area designed to reduce the risk of conflict in peacetime. Pilots can use standardized visual signals or internationally recognized radio frequencies to communicate during interceptions without relying on direct contact. The Royal Norwegian Air Force confirmed the incident in a social media update, noting that it is required to deploy interceptors within 15 minutes under NATO commitments. So far in 2026, it has carried out 19 such missions, identifying 28 aircraft. The air force also reported intercepting a Russian Tupolev Tu-142 earlier in the same week, though no exact date was provided. The Il-38 is an anti-submarine warfare aircraft developed in the Soviet era for detecting and engaging submarines, as well as conducting maritime surveillance, search and rescue, and mine-laying missions. First flown in 1961, it remains in service despite production ending in the 1970s. Meanwhile, the Tu-142, a derivative of the Tupolev Tu-95, serves a similar reconnaissance and anti-submarine role. Variants of the Tu-95 have also been used in missile strikes against Ukraine. Similar incidents have occurred elsewhere. In September 2024, Japan lodged a protest after a Russian Il-38 entered airspace near Hokkaido, while a Tu-142 flew over disputed areas without officially breaching Japanese airspace.
