Poland, frequently praised by the U.S. as a “model ally” and among top NATO defense spenders, was taken by surprise when the U.S. announced a “delay” of a long-planned rotation of troops. Almost as if Warsaw was being punished for something. Then on Tuesday, U.S. Vice President JD Vance said that it is just a standard delay, adding that “Poland is capable of defending itself.”
“I think the White House and the Pentagon have just over the past 24 hours or so, understood how incoherent this seems,” Jim Townsend, Senior Fellow at CNAS Transatlantic Security Program and former Pentagon and NATO official, told TVP World, commenting on what he called a “slapdash” change to the rotation schedule.
