A Russian oil tanker struck by a Ukrainian drone began to sink near the Novoshakhtinsk oil refinery’s marine terminal. On December 15, Ukrainian forces struck this area, when a fire broke out approximately 850 meters from the tanker damaged in the current attack. The tanker itself was attacked on the night of December 18. Rostov Region Governor Yuri Slyusar reported damage to the vessel, as well as deaths and injuries among its crew. In local public groups, eyewitnesses noted that the attack on the region was likely carried out using jet-powered drones. According to eyewitnesses, after the attack, the vessel began to sink, with the stern flooded almost to the level of the superstructure. The impact area was quickly surrounded, and the tanker itself was protected with booms. As of the evening of December 17, the tanker was located at Berth No. 69 in the port of Rostov-on-Don, which is owned by Rosmortrans-Terminal, a petroleum product transshipment company. The company transships petroleum products from tank cars to storage vessels, diesel fuel and light fuel oil from tank trucks to storage vessels, and diesel fuel from ships to tank trucks.
The vessel was built in 1969 as a dry cargo ship, and in 2004 it was converted into an oil tanker designed for the transportation of petroleum products of all classes.
The length of the vessel is 138.8 meters, width – 16.7 meters, height of the side – 5.5 meters, draft – about 3 meters. The tanker has a deadweight of 5,100 tons. The vessel is owned by Volgo-Balt Service.
