Ten thousands of people have poured into the streets in Tehran, the capital of Iran. İmages of large crowds gathering in various parts of the city have spread on social networks.
The footage shows mass marches and slogans continuing during the night hours.
Witnesses said the protests intensified mainly in the evening, with tense moments between security forces and protesters in some areas. Footage circulating on social media showed large crowds moving along main avenues.
Official Tehran has not yet released detailed information about the scale of the protests and possible detainees. However, observers believe that US President Donald Trump’s speech played an important psychological impulse in the transition of domestic discontent in Iran to an open phase. Trump addressed the protesters in Iran. He advised Iranian protesters to continue their actions and to remember the names of those involved in violence. Trump stated that protesters should, if possible, take control over state institutions and document the identities of those who commit violence against them.
"Iranian Patriots, keep protesting – take over your institutions!!!… help is on its way," Trump said in a post on Truth Social, without saying what that help might be.
The US president noted that he had heard different figures regarding the number of fatalities in Iran. According to him, whatever the numbers, even the death of one person is unacceptable. Trump added that if the disseminated information is true, Iranians are being treated with extreme cruelty.
In his speech, Trump, using the phrase “Let’s make Iran great again,” stated that Iran was once a powerful country and that the current situation was caused by “forces that seized the regime.” According to him, the events are at a very sensitive stage, and these processes could pose a threat not only to Iran but on a broader scale.
He said he had canceled all meetings with Iranian officials until the "senseless killing" of protesters stopped and in a later speech told Iranians to "save the name of the killers and the abusers … because they’ll pay a very big price." "The killing looks like it’s significant, but we don’t know yet for certain," said Trump upon returning to the Washington area from Detroit, adding he would know more after receiving a report about the Iran protests.
"We’ll act accordingly," he said.
The U.S. State Department on Tuesday urged American citizens to leave Iran now including by land through Turkey or Armenia. Trump has recently floated the possibility of intervention in the country – his national security team is expected to meet today to discuss the options.
Iran’s government has been "unable to provide the basics of life", says David Satterfield, a former US ambassador in the Middle East, and a former Middle East Envoy to President Joe Biden.
Those basics are "water, fuel, electricity, and food at rates that is affordable – not just by lower economic classes, but by the upper and upper-middle classes as well. The regime doesn’t have the resources to address the sources of the protests", he tells.
