Amid the war against Ukraine, economic instability, and general anxiety in Russia, there has been a sharp increase in the use of magic, fortune tellers, witches, and healers . Reuters reports this in an article about the surge in mysticism among Russians. The agency notes that the "magicians’" new clientele also includes Russian military personnel returning from the front on leave. They seek advice, predictions, and "protection," including for personal problems and fears of losing control of their lives.
The state-run VTsIOM directly linked the surge in interest in mysticism to anxiety caused by "geopolitical and economic challenges." In a survey published on March 27, the center reported that 85% of Russians have at least once engaged in some form of magical practice, and 81% accept the existence of at least one supernatural entity. Almost half believe that certain people are able to predict the future or have magical powers. Reuters reports that sales of crystal balls, protective amulets, and other "magical" paraphernalia have increased in Russia. VTsIOM, meanwhile, calls such beliefs a tool for psychological defense in times of uncertainty and military threats.
In other words, we are no longer talking about everyday superstitions, but about a noticeable social symptom: the stronger the war and the pressure on society, the more people seek support not in institutions, but in the supernatural. According to Reuters, the growing popularity of witches, fortune tellers, and occult practices is already causing concern among the Russian Orthodox Church and some Russian lawmakers. Russia is witnessing a striking rise in the popularity of fortune-telling, occult services, and esoteric practices. Self-professed witches, shamans, and clairvoyants, alongside more conventional astrologers and psychics, flood social media and appear in popular TV shows. Television programs, such as “Battle of Psychics,” “Reality Show,” or “Incredible People,” feature psychic competitions and invite astrologers and clairvoyants to comment on national events. Telegram channels devoted to astrology, magic, and spiritual counseling have garnered hundreds of thousands of subscribers. Master classes and certificate programs in occult practices have also attracted a growing number of paying participants. The occult industry in Russia has grown into a multi-billion-dollar sector. According to the virtual cash register provider for online businesses, AtolOnline, the market for occult services in Russia reached an estimated 2.4 trillion rubles in 2024. To put this in perspective, in the same year, Russians spent 2.1 trillion rubles on food. The industry is also growing: market analysis firm TAdviser estimates that in 2024, the demand for magic attributes rose 34% from 2023. Journalists often interpret the rise of occult practices as a symptom of collective anxiety produced by war, sanctions, economic instability, and the erosion of predictable social routines. A reporter for Kyiv Post cited various Russian news stories highlighting the popularity of queries about fortune-teller predictions on the outcome of the war in Ukraine, enchanted military kits, and frontline shamans. The Moscow Times has linked the rise of mysticism, among other factors, to war stress and public apathy; this thesis is reinforced by the fact that Ukraine has also experienced a parallel surge in mysticism, according to the reports of popular internet searches.
