Poland’s pagan spring festival, the WWII Museum & the birth of Solidarity | Pulse of Culture

This week on Pulse of Culture, we travel to northern Poland, where history is never far from the surface.

In Sopot, ancient Slavic traditions mark the arrival of spring. A pagan ritual draws crowds to the Baltic coast every year, featuring fire and folklore in a celebration that has endured for centuries.

In Gdańsk, the Museum of the Second World War tells the story of the conflict through the experiences of individuals. It is one of Europe’s most powerful historical institutions.

Also in Gdańsk: the European Solidarity Centre, where a trade union sparked a revolution that dismantled communism and redrew the map of Europe.

At the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, the work of three female artists commands attention: Maria Jarema, Julie Mehretu, and Minh Lan Tran. In Łódź, the 32nd International Festival of Pleasant and Unpleasant Arts celebrates World Theatre Day with productions by Warlikowski, Klata, and Skrzywanek.

Pulse of Culture is a weekly English-language magazine for anyone with a connection to Poland, including tourists, the diaspora, and the simply curious. New episodes are released every Sunday.
