A solo protester and a few journalists were detained in Moscow Tuesday morning during a demonstration against internet limitations. According to Associated Press organised by former presidential candidate Boris Nadezhdin, the protest took place in front of the lower house of the Russian parliament. The State Duma was meant to consider in the third and final reading a bill making it illegal to search for "extremist materials”, including with the use of VPN. Meta and many other sources were labelled "extremist" by Russia. Nadezhdin said he requested permission with Moscow authorities to hold the protest but was refused. Since Russian President Vladimir Putin sent troops into Ukraine in February 2022, Russian authorities have blocked multiple dissenting media outlets and cut access to X, as well as Meta’s Facebook and Instagram. Later, YouTube faced mass outages. In the last two months, cellphone internet shutdowns, which officials say are needed to foil Ukrainian drones, have hit dozens of Russian regions — from those near the fighting to parts of Siberia and even the Far East. Some Wi-Fi outages also have been reported.
