Under the guise of fighting corruption, Russian security forces are eliminating undesirables who they consider guilty of failures on the battlefield. This is stated in an article in The New York Times .

Journalists have noticed a trend that shows how the central Russian government is cracking down on officials in regions bordering Ukraine. Corruption cases have already been opened against the top brass in three of the five border regions.

Officials Accused of Embezzling Border Defense Funds. Senior officials in these regions have been arrested and accused by prosecutors of embezzling funds that Moscow allocated for border fortifications. The NYT noted that the cases were brought after successful Ukrainian cross-border attacks.

The Kremlin is also gradually changing the leadership in the military. This is also done through accusations of corruption, and not for failed tasks. The publication recalled that since last year, when the Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu was fired, a purge of military generals and heads of the Defense Ministry in Russia has continued in connection with corruption cases.

"As a rule, Putin does not admit mistakes on the battlefield and does not publicly blame his loyal aides for failures. Criticism of the military is illegal in Russia. So anti-corruption cases have become a convenient option for Moscow to reassure the public without admitting failure of the central apparatus," the NYT writes.

The article says that the Kremlin cannot blame officials for wartime failures because that would force leaders to admit that the campaign did not go according to plan. So they are being prosecuted for corruption. According to the NYT, corruption cases have become a way for the Russian elite to settle scores, assert their influence and send a message to certain sections of society.

However, as the war continues, such cases are becoming more frequent, NYT claims. Journalists calculated that in the first quarter of this year, the number of corruption-related crimes uncovered by the Russian Prosecutor General’s Office increased by 24% compared to the previous year. Corruption cases usually concern government officials.

Alexandra Prokopenko, a research fellow at the Carnegie Russia Eurasia Center, told the publication that the growing wave of cases shows how the FSB, Russia’s internal security service, and the prosecutor’s office are expanding their influence amid intensifying wartime repression.

"The repressions that began with ordinary people and oppositionists have spread to the ruling class, and purges are beginning there," Prokopenko said.

The article concludes that these legal maneuvers keep elites on their toes. And in some cases, they may be aimed at quelling public anger over failures on the battlefield.
