Russia’s summer offensive in Ukraine has not reached Kremlin’s expectations. Thus, the Russian army managed to seize only 857 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory in the first half of summer, war-tracking platform DeepState reported. While this marks a faster pace than in the spring, it still doesn’t match the 730 square kilometers gained in just one month back in November 2024, DeepState reported. It should be noted that Ukraine has widely deployed First Person View combat drones to repel Russia’s small infantry unit attacks that comprise the main assault tactics of the Russian army. According to The Wall Street Journal, Ukraine holds an advantage both in the quantity and quality of these drones. As a result of the sustained drone threat, Russia has scaled back its use of armored vehicles and is facing mounting logistical issues. Supply convoys operating up to 20 kilometers behind the front lines are increasingly being targeted by kamikaze drones. The Economist has described Russia’s summer’s offensive as “Russia’s bloodiest operation since the war began” in February 2022. According to Economist, nearly 30,000 Russian soldiers have been killed since early May. The main objectives of Russia’s summer campaign are the cities of Pokrovsk and Kostiantynivka in Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region. Russian forces are trying to encircle these cities and disrupt their supply lines. However, in the Sumy region, Ukrainian counteroffensives have successfully halted Russian advances. As previously, during its summer offensive, the Russian military relied on its established strategy: exerting pressure across multiple fronts at once. Although this tactic limits the potential for deep territorial gains, it forces Ukrainian forces, already strained by personnel shortages, to stretch their troops thin along the entire front. Moscow’s numerical advantage is gradually pushing Ukrainian forces to retreat. Recently, Russia scaled up missile and drone attacks on Ukrainian military enlistment offices in an effort to cripple Ukraine’s mobilization efforts and further tip the manpower balance in Russia’s favor.
