One possible scenario for an attack on Iran could be a raid by special forces on Iranian nuclear facilities. This is reported by The New York Times citing sources familiar with the discussions within the US administration.
According to the publication, the White House is considering not only air and missile strikes, but also special forces operations against Iranian nuclear facilities that have not yet been destroyed. In recent days, Donald Trump and his advisers, as the The New York Times notes, have been discussing options for significantly more ambitious actions than those previously discussed. The stated goal of such scenarios is to inflict serious damage on Iran’s missile and nuclear programs, as well as to potentially weaken the institution of the country’s supreme leader. Alternative options include strikes on targets that could provoke internal chaos and instability, which, according to some advisers, could pave the way for the replacement of Iran’s supreme leader, Ali Khamenei. Israel, in turn, insists on its own approach, which involves a large-scale joint attack with the United States on the Iranian missile system. U.S. President Donald Trump is considering options for launching airstrikes against Iranian leaders and security officials, as well as nuclear facilities and government institutions, people familiar with the matter told CNN. "Options he is now considering include US military airstrikes aimed at Iran’s leaders and the security officials believed to be responsible for the killings, as well as strikes on Iranian nuclear sites and government institutions," the sources said. Iran’s nuclear chief said that if Iran’s nuclear sites have been bombed and destroyed, the International Atomic Energy Agency has no grounds to demand continued oversight. Mohammad Eslami, the head of the atomic energy organization of Iran, said Iran had not breached its commitments and accused the agency of taking politicized positions, according to remarks carried by Iranian media. He said the IAEA should act strictly within its statutory mandate, amid heightened tensions over Iran’s nuclear program. US President Donald Trump ordered strikes on three of Iran’s main nuclear sites in June, calling the program “obliterated,” but experts dispute that, saying bombs likely failed to penetrate underground halls, and with UN inspectors barred, the true damage is uncertain. Recall, President Donald Trump sharply intensified his threats to the Islamic Republic, suggesting that if Tehran did not agree to a set of demands, he could mount an attack "with speed and violence." To underline the threat, the Pentagon moved the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln – along with destroyers, bombers and fighter jets – to positions within striking distance of the country. Foremost among the various demands the U.S. administration has put before Iran’s leader a permanent end to the country’s uranium enrichment program. It has also called for limits to the development of ballistic missiles and a cutting off of Tehran’s support for proxy groups in the Middle East, including Hamas, Hezbollah and the Houthis. Trump apparently sees in this moment an opportunity to squeeze an Iran weakened by a poor economy and massive protests that swept through the country in early January.
