Russian capital Moscow has been paralyzed by heavy snowfall, while powerful cyclone has hit Far Eastern Kamchatka Peninsula. Snow depth in Russian capital Moscow has reached 43 cm, approaching the 1942 record of 49 cm, according to Roman Vilfand, scientific director of the Russian Hydrometeorological Center. "At the VDNKh station today, we have 43 cm. That’s close to a record; 26 is normal, 49 is a record for this day, and here we have 43 cm," he said. The forecaster clarified that snow depth varies for Moscow and the Moscow region. For example, in Kolomna, the snow depth is 50 cm, while in Cherusti, it’s 54 cm. Vilfand recalled the "famous winter" of 1941, when the Red Army’s counteroffensive began: "There were films of our soldiers, waist-deep in snow, counterattacking, and pushing the Germans back from Moscow." A similarly snowy winter followed in 1942. Heavy snowfall in Moscow began on January 9th. According to the city’s base weather station at VDNKh, 22 mm of precipitation fell in the capital in one day—9.1 mm higher than the previous record, which had stood for exactly half a century. This represents 42% of the monthly average. The all-time January daily record of 23 mm was set in 1970. Snowfall continued into the night of January 12th. The snowfall isn’t stopping there—the Hydrometeorological Center is predicting another wave of precipitation on the night of January 14. Snow will continue throughout the following day, with the total snow cover potentially increasing by 7 cm.In early 2026, Cyclone Frances swept through Moscow, blanketing the streets with snow and paralyzing transportation. Forecasters say the storm’s intensity ranked among the five most powerful in the past 146 years, with snowdrifts reaching half a meter in height. Meanwhile, a powerful cyclone hit Russia’s Far Eastern Kamchatka Peninsula on Tuesday, bringing strong winds and record snowfall. According to Associated Press thirty percent of the monthly precipitation fell within 24 hours, and wind gusts reached up to 50 m/s. Public transportation was partially suspended in the regional capital, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. Buses were replaced by all-terrain vehicles, which are currently transporting people along the city’s main routes. One man became stuck in a snowdrift and was unable to free himself for a long time. He called rescuers, who dug him out and brought him home, the Russian Emergency Ministry said on social media. Schools will remain closed until the end of the week, as another cyclone is expected to arrive late on Wednesday.
