A record snowfall disrupted the work of Sheremetyevo Airport in Russian capital Moscow on Friday evening and Saturday, with more than 200 flights being cancelled across the city overnight. The heavy snowfall today broke a 56-years record in the capital. In addition, there are delays in baggage claim. The airport has imposed restrictions on arrivals, while departures are operating at full capacity to stabilize the situation, according to information provided by Sheremetyevo. Some flights have been redirected to other Moscow airports, as well as to Nizhny Novgorod, Saint Petersburg, and other cities. Russian flag carrier Aeroflot has asked passengers of canceled flights not to come to the airport. Due to the disruptions, many passengers spent several hours at the airport or on planes, and about three thousand people could not retrieve their luggage.Severe weather conditions caused numerous accidents on the Yaroslavskoye Highway, a key route linking Moscow with the north-eastern part of the region, forcing it to be closed. Drivers were stuck in traffic for more than eight hours, and the traffic jam was cleared only by morning. According to a specialist of the Phobos weather center, 22 mm snow fell in the capital per day, or 42% of the monthly precipitation rate. The height of the snow cover in Moscow on Saturday reached 39 cm, and half-meter snowdrifts grew in the Moscow region. Saturday’s snowfall in Moscow broke the record of 1976, when 12.9 mm of precipitation was recorded in the capital.
