Due to large-scale irreversible losses of weapons and military equipment, Russia has begun mass decommissioning of obsolete combat vehicles, in particular T-62 tanks. This was reported by the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine. The department noted that, amid the depletion of reserves of equipment from the 1970s, the command of the Russian Armed Forces began to actively return even older models to service, namely T-62 tanks.
“The restoration of these vehicles is taking place mainly at the 103rd Armored Repair Plant, located in the town of Atamanovka, Trans-Baikal Territory. The supply of T-62 tanks to the combat zone is carried out mainly from the warehouses of the Eastern Military District,” the intelligence service said.
The Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine clarified that on June 27, 2025, the transfer of 21 T-62 tanks from the Eastern Military District to the European part of the Russian Federation was recorded.
“The technical condition of most of these vehicles is unsatisfactory: the tanks have been stored outdoors for decades, without maintenance. However, due to the acute shortage of modern main battle tanks, such as the T-90M and T-72B3M, the use of the T-62 is considered a temporary but forced solution,” the intelligence officers explained.
According to them, the key factors limiting the production capabilities of modern armored vehicles in the Russian Federation remain the lack of industrial capacity and the shortage of imported high-tech components.
“In practice, T-62s are used not only as active combat units, but also as stationary firing points to strengthen defensive positions,” the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine added.
So, the Kremlin cannot ignore the colossal and irreparable losses in the war against Ukraine.
