Seconds are saved, lives are gambled. At a railway crossing in Poland, a driver stuck in traffic swerved out of the line, ignored the red light, and steered around the barriers to beat an approaching train. Moments later, another driver followed.
The gamble is both reckless and expensive. Running a red light at a rail crossing can result in fines of up to €450. Repeat offenses can push penalties to around €900 and the possibility of losing your driver’s license.
Although accidents at railway crossings have declined in recent years, Poland’s rail regulator says dozens of people are still killed every year. Most of the victims are motorists and pedestrians, undone by decisions that save seconds and risk everything.
