Russian troops are focusing the bulk of their offensive operations around Oleksandrivsk and Pokrovsk in Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy revealed on Monday. In an afternoon briefing, he explained that he had received updates from Ukraine’s top military leadership, including Oleksandr Syrsky and Andriy Hnatov. They informed him about the current battlefield conditions as well as ongoing long-range strike missions. Zelenskiy noted that discussions centered on developments along the Oleksandrivsk and Pokrovsk fronts, where Russian forces are applying the most pressure and where Ukrainian defenses are correspondingly concentrated. According to Ukraine’s General Staff, combat around Pokrovsk remains especially fierce. Russian troops reportedly launched 25 assaults in that area, targeting multiple nearby settlements, with some engagements still continuing at the time. Meanwhile, in the Oleksandrivsk sector, Ukrainian officials reported 11 separate Russian attacks across several locations. He also highlighted the growing effectiveness of Ukraine’s long-range strikes, saying they are cutting into Russia’s revenue—particularly from oil exports. Operations in regions like the Black Sea are having a broader impact, affecting both northeastern and southeastern areas where such strikes are active. His comments came after a significant overnight drone attack that disabled a major Russian oil terminal on the Black Sea, along with a sustained week-long effort targeting Baltic ports that reportedly cost Russia close to $1 billion in oil income. Zelensky added that he had approved additional measures in coordination with military leaders, emphasizing that both frontline resilience and long-range strike capabilities should strengthen Ukraine’s diplomatic leverage and partnerships abroad. He stressed that Ukraine is not only defending itself but also contributing to broader international security. The Pokrovsk axis has remained one of the most heavily contested areas on the eastern front in recent months, with repeated Russian attempts to push further into Donetsk being met with persistent Ukrainian resistance. Russia continues to frame control of the Donbas region—covering Donetsk and Luhansk—as a central objective of the war. Despite the pressure, Ukrainian forces continue to resist and hold defensive lines in the region, preventing rapid Russian advances. At the same time, Ukraine is increasingly relying on long-range strike capabilities to weaken Russia’s operational capacity beyond the immediate frontline, targeting infrastructure and logistics that support military operations. Zelensky recently suggested that the United States had tied potential security guarantees to Ukraine withdrawing from territories Russia has failed to capture over more than a decade of conflict. However, Marco Rubio rejected that interpretation, saying Zelensky had misunderstood the proposal. Zelensky further claimed that Moscow had issued a two-month deadline for Ukraine to pull out of the Donbas or face stricter peace conditions – an ultimatum he dismissed outright, asserting that Russia would not achieve such gains within that timeframe.
