The Kremlin is likely taking steps to prevent US President Donald Trump’s administration from launching a potential military operation against Iran. Amid media reports of the US side’s readiness to strike Iran, Tehran and Moscow announced joint naval exercises. Iranian Rear Admiral Hassan Maqsoodloo said the maneuvers will begin on Thursday and will take place in the Sea of Oman and the northern Indian Ocean, Mehr reports. The main objective of the exercises will be "to develop cooperation between the fleets of the two countries and enhance the sustainability of maritime security in the region." One of the key objectives of the maneuvers is "coordinating actions to counter threats at sea." Specifically, Russian and Iranian military personnel will practice "protecting merchant vessels and oil tankers, joint actions against maritime terrorism, and exchanging operational skills during maritime operations." According to the organizers, such exercises should improve the coordination of actions of naval units and improve the practice of joint response to crisis situations. Tehran emphasizes that the exercises are aimed not only at military training, but also at strengthening bilateral ties and developing regional cooperation. It is also noted that the conduct of these exercises reflects the increased attention of both countries to the situation in the Sea of Oman and the northern Indian Ocean. The maneuvers were announced the day before by Nikolai Patrushev, aide to the Russian dictator. He stated that in addition to Iranian and Russian naval vessels, Chinese warships would also participate. Recently, it was reported that the Russian corvette Stoikiy had called at the port of Bandar Abbas in southern Iran. The ship has been in Iran since February 14, during which time the crew replenished fuel and provisions. Media previously reported that American media sources have not ruled out the possibility of a US military operation against Iran in the near future. According to Axios, the likelihood of such a scenario is estimated at approximately 90%. Against this backdrop, Iran is actively preparing for a possible war. Following the loss of some of its S-300 systems in 2024-2025, the country’s air defense system now relies on Russian S-400s and Iranian Bavar-373 systems . Tehran positions the latter as an analogue of modern Russian systems, capable of intercepting targets at high altitudes. However, despite its modern systems, Iran’s air defenses have vulnerabilities. These include problems integrating various systems into a single control loop, as well as difficulties detecting stealth aircraft like the F-35. This makes Iran’s air defenses less resilient to strikes by high-tech US aircraft. In addition to relatively adequate air defense, Tehran boasts significant missile stockpiles . As of February 2026, Iran’s ballistic missile arsenal is estimated at 2,500-3,000. In the event of a conflict, these missiles could be used to strike American military bases in the Middle East. Furthermore, Iran is capable of launching 200 to 400 missiles and drones in a single attack wave, hoping to overwhelm US air defense systems such as the Patriot and Aegis. The country also possesses between 3,500 and 5,000 drones of various types, a significant number of which are Shahed-class suicide drones.
