The Ukrainian Armed Forces are rapidly increasing the number of medium-range drone strikes against Russian forces, demonstrating the growing capabilities of the Ukrainian army, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated . Kyiv is increasingly relying on so-called "medium strikes" to target logistics centers, troop concentrations, and air defense systems tens of kilometers behind the front lines. The number of strikes at distances greater than 20 kilometers has doubled compared to March and quadrupled compared to February, Reuters reports . "And there will be more. This is a priority," the Ukrainian leader stated on social media. Ukraine is reportedly actively exploring medium-range strikes – targeting targets beyond the reach of FPV drones – as it develops its own defense sector and seeks to reduce its dependence on Western aid. The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense previously reported that in April, Ukrainian forces carried out more than 160 medium-range strikes at ranges of 120–150 km. Targets included more than 65 logistics and ammunition depots, 33 drone control centers and workshops, and 17 troop command posts both in the occupied territories of Ukraine and in the border regions of Russia.
"We are targeting resources, disrupting supplies, and reducing the intensity of shelling, as well as troop mobility. The April strikes are a systematic campaign to exhaust Russia," the statement said. These efforts are intensifying as Russian forces press on key, heavily fortified cities in the east in an attempt to seize the rest of Ukraine’s war-torn Donetsk region, the media reports. Outnumbered and outgunned on the battlefield, Ukraine has also intensified attacks on energy and military-industrial facilities deep inside Russia to weaken the Kremlin’s war machine. In recent weeks, Ukrainian forces have launched multiple strikes on the seaport and oil refinery in Tuapse, Russia, in the southwest of the country, causing clouds of black smoke and an oil spill into the Black Sea. Ukraine has also targeted Russian military-industrial facilities, including defense production facilities in the city of Cheboksary, approximately 1,500 kilometers away, using its own Flamingo cruise missiles. Robert Brovdy, commander of Ukraine’s drone force, said his units hit 25 air defense systems, as well as 13 radar and electronic warfare systems, in April to help pave the way for Kyiv’s long-range strike campaign. "The consistent and regular destruction of air defense systems at the operational level opens corridors for escalating deep strikes against military-industrial complex and energy sector targets," he emphasized. Recently, Ukraine launched a wave of strikes against Russian oil targets, hitting a key loading port on the Baltic Sea and two tankers that Ukraine alleges were illegally used to transport Russian crude. A nighttime drone strike sparked a blaze at Russia’s largest oil exporting port on the Baltic Sea, the port of Primorsk, according to Russian regional Gov. Alexander Drozdenko. The port, operated by Russia’s state oil firm Transneft, is capable of handling hundreds of thousands of barrels per day. Primorsk, which was targeted multiple times in March, lies over 620 miles from Ukraine, between the Russian-Finnish border and Russia’s second-largest city of St. Petersburg. Local Gov. Drozdenko said that the drone strike did not cause an oil spill, but gave no immediate further comment regarding casualties or damage. But Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Ukrainian forces destroyed several military and other targets, while also inflicting significant damage on oil port infrastructure. “One more Russian carrier of Kalibr missiles is out of action. Major General Yevhen Khmara reported on the successful destruction of targets in the Primorsk port,” Zelensky wrote in a Telegram post on Sunday. According to Zelensky, Ukrainian drones also hit a Karakurt missile ship, a patrol boat, and a tanker belonging to Russia’s so-called shadow oil fleet, used to evade Western sanctions and price caps on Russian energy.
