Major General Mikhail Gudkov, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy, was killed by a Ukrainian missile strike on July 2, 2025, in Kursk. Gudkov, promoted just months earlier in March, is now the 16th confirmed Russian general eliminated since the invasion began in 2022, per the UK Ministry of Defence.
His death follows a wave of senior-level losses in the Russian military, including the reported deaths of Vice Admiral Ildar Akhmerov and FSB Fifth Service Head Alexey Komkov, who was assassinated in Moscow. Ukraine’s precise and sustained targeting of top generals has created serious instability inside Russia’s chain of command.
