In the fifth year of full-scale war, the Russian army faces a severe shortage of air defense systems. The aggressor is attempting to reinforce its rear areas with Soviet anti-aircraft systems seized from the navy. This was reported by Robert "Madyar" Brovdi, Commander of the Unmanned Systems Forces of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, in an interview with Ukrainska Pravda. He noted that several weeks ago, his fighters destroyed a SAM system removed from a Russian military cruiser in the Donetsk region, 122 km from the front. "It’s funny, but it speaks volumes. They don’t have enough funds," Madyar said. In addition, according to him, the Russians are actively using radar stations on the front lines that were manufactured back in the 1960s. The commander emphasized that his SBS is conducting an operation to destroy Russian air defenses. Since the beginning of 2026 alone, Ukrainian drones have destroyed 134 Russian air defense units. Thanks to this, according to "Madyar," they have "cut corridors" for long-range drones and the destruction of Russian rear-area targets.
Russian air defenses are losing their ability to repel drone attacks due to a shortage of missiles, which results from precise Ukrainian strikes, stated Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrskyi, recently. The top general separately emphasized the highly effective attacks on strategic facilities on Russian territory, which led to the depletion of Russian air defense resources.
"Systematic strikes on Russian production facilities are further reducing air defense capabilities of the adversary, who is already experiencing a shortage of missiles to counter Ukrainian unmanned systems," he stressed. Russia has few air defense systems capable of shooting down ballistic missiles, and to cover its entire territory it would need over 150-200 S-400 systems. Military analyst and founder of the NGO Reactive Mail Pavlo Narozhnyi stated this on Espreso TV.
"The Russians have several air defense systems capable of shooting down ballistic missiles. Specifically, the S-300, S-350, S-400, and S-500. Of all these systems, only the S-400 and S-500 are currently capable of countering ballistic missiles, since the S-300 was developed quite a long time ago. Before the war, Russia had over 50 S-400 air defense complexes, but as of today, Ukraine’s Defense Forces have destroyed at least 25 of them. Moreover, most of these complexes are located in temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine. However, our primary targets are located on Russian territory itself, and the Russians are unlikely to relocate such complexes from the temporarily occupied territories to the Russian Federation territory. Therefore, they truly lack effective countermeasures against ballistic missiles," Narozhnyi explained. The analyst emphasized that with the increase in ballistic missile attacks, Russians will have to urgently seek systems to protect their own facilities. "Ukraine is searching worldwide to obtain at least a few Patriot systems. We’re standing in line and waiting for additional Patriot systems. The Russians will face an absolutely identical situation. They have over 25 complexes capable of shooting down ballistic missiles, but they would need at least 150-200 units to cover their entire territory," he concluded.
