Russia has dramatically intensified its aerial campaign against Ukraine, launching around 1,600 attack drones, nearly 1,100 guided bombs, and three missiles over the past week alone, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy revealed. In a video address on May 2, Zelenskiy described the sustained bombardment as a calculated effort to overload and exhaust Ukraine’s air defense systems. Zelensky stressed that a steady flow of interceptor missiles remains essential for defending the country, while continued international sanctions are equally important to curb the Kremlin’s capacity to finance the war. He warned that easing pressure on Russia or allowing sanctions loopholes to persist would only strengthen Moscow’s military resources. The Ukrainian leader also condemned what he described as a relentless campaign of terror against civilians living in frontline and border regions. Among the latest incidents was a Russian FPV drone strike on a public minibus in Kherson on Saturday morning. The attack killed a female passenger and a municipal employee, while seven others suffered blast-related injuries and were taken to hospital. Zelenskiy said the drone operators knowingly targeted civilians. During the night, Russian forces also hit a residential high-rise in Kharkiv and attacked energy facilities in the Mykolaiv region. Other regions affected by strikes included Dnipropetrovsk, Odesa, Sumy, Kherson, and Donetsk. According to the Ukrainian Air Force, Russia launched 163 drones in the latest overnight assault. Ukrainian defenses reportedly intercepted or electronically jammed 142 of them, although 17 drones still managed to hit targets at 12 separate locations nationwide. Zelenskiy additionally expressed gratitude to those working to block Russian efforts to bypass sanctions, arguing that every loophole left open helps sustain Moscow’s war machine.
