In Russia’s invading military, a regiment commander shot and killed the battalion commander of the 5th Brigade and was subsequently killed by unknown assailants.
Member of the Russian Federation’s Public Chamber Pyotr Lundstrem reported that Yuriy Burakov, commander of the 2nd Battalion of the 95th Regiment of the 5th Brigade, with the call sign “Gray”, will be buried in occupied Volnovakha in the Donetsk region.
Yuriy Burakov was shot in July 2025. Dmitry Ivankevich, commander of the 95th Regiment with the call sign “Old,” is accused of his murder, according to the publication ASTRA.
“We have come a very long way since late July 2025, when a career military officer and former intelligence officer who had volunteered for the front lines was treacherously killed by ‘his own people,’” the post reads.
Ivankevich later gave a confession. According to Lundström, the murder occurred because Burakov had learned of embezzlement and attempts to cover up heavy losses.
Ivankevych was also killed in December. His body was found with four gunshot wounds.
Who did it and under what circumstances remains unknown.
ASTRA published an investigation into the torture of Russian soldiers by commanders of the 5th and 110th Brigades.
According to sources who spoke with the editorial staff, the commanders set up a veritable “concentration camp” on the grounds of the abandoned Petrovska Mine in Donetsk.
It was there, before his death, that soldiers from the 5th Brigade tortured American Russell Bentley, who had been engaged in pro-Russian propaganda for years.
This 5th Separate Guards Motorized Rifle Brigade initially operated as an illegal armed group in the occupied territory of Ukraine, starting in 2014 under the guise of the Oplot battalion.
In 2022, the brigade was officially incorporated into the Russian Armed Forces as part of the 51st Guards Combined Arms Army.
