After effectively restricting Russian terminals’ access to Starlink, the pace of the Russian occupation army’s advance in Ukraine appears to be slowing. Politico reports this, citing an unnamed Ukrainian military official.
According to him, this trend is indeed being recorded in certain areas of the front, but it is too early to draw final conclusions. "It will be necessary to continue monitoring to determine whether it persists and whether other factors emerge ," the source told reporters. The official clarified that during the inspection, not only devices used by Russian units were disabled, but also some unregistered Ukrainian military Starlink networks. The registration process for these networks is ongoing. Other sources for the publication also confirm the problems that Russian troops are currently facing. "In fact, Russian units are having problems right now. They’re like blind kittens ," said one of the leaders of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, whose name was not disclosed. As a reminder, this week, the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense, in coordination with SpaceX, launched a large-scale inspection of Starlink terminals. This was prompted by reports that Russian occupiers had begun illegally using Starlink satellite communications during massive drone attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure.
Business Insider explains that this decision is due to Ukrainian officials and military experts’ concerns about Russian forces increasingly using Starlink to conduct long-range strikes and coordinate forces.
"The enemy is reporting a mass Starlink outage among Russian units on the front," Sergei Sternenko, head of a major Ukrainian combat drone manufacturer, said. He added that the Ukrainian army will regain its advantage in communications thanks to this decision, while the Russian occupiers will have a number of problems with controlling troops at the tactical level.
Serhiy Flesh Beskrestov, an adviser on unmanned warfare at the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense, shared that this step disrupted Russian ground attacks in some areas of the front.
"The enemy doesn’t even have problems on the front lines. The enemy is facing a catastrophe," he wrote on his Telegram channel.
The publication emphasizes that due to US sanctions imposed in 2022 following the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, SpaceX is not selling Starlink terminals to Russia.
However, as Ukrainian military officials note, this doesn’t stop Russians from purchasing them on the black market, which is a cause for concern. Moreover, Kyiv claims to have found American equipment in downed reconnaissance drones.
The article says pressure on SpaceX to restrict Russia’s access reached a climax last month when the Ukrainian military said it began seeing Starlink terminals on long-range drones.
However, as the publication points out, disabling the Kremlin’s forces from Starlink proved more challenging than simple geofencing. This is because the Ukrainian military also uses Starlink, so cutting off access in the disputed regions would impact Kyiv’s operations.
The publication added that the situation appears to be changing with the whitelist. The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense and influential Telegram users are urging the military to quickly register their terminals in the DELTA battlespace management system.
Access restrictions are expected to extend to civilian areas far from the front lines. This stems from concerns that Starlink could be used to guide Russian Shahed drones that attack cities.
The article states that businesses must apply for access through an online portal, and that civilians should bring all their private Starlink terminals to administrative centers along with their national ID.
"We continue to test Starlink terminals. The first batch of terminals included in the whitelist is already operational," said Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov.
The publication noted that the connectivity changes resulted in Starlink access being restricted for terminals traveling faster than 75 kilometers per hour, or approximately 46 miles per hour, in an effort to block attack drones from targeting them.
The article emphasizes that it is not yet clear how exactly Starlink’s new measures will affect the war, but initial reports from Russia and Ukraine indicate that this move is already influencing the course of hostilities
