Russian strategic aviation is in poor condition for a number of reasons, Anatoly Khrapchinsky, a former air force officer of Ukraine and now deputy general director of a company producing electronic warfare equipment, told Radio NV.
"Firstly, because they have been in operation for a long time and already in 2022-23 the Tu-95 needed major repairs. Therefore, a significant reduction in service life, active use of these aircraft during massive shelling. Reduction of resources and untimely repairs lead to the loss of the ability to operate them. That is why they moved them as far away as possible. To save what they can save," Khrapchinsky said.
At the same time, he added that the appearance of Shahed jets among the occupiers indicates the enemy’s goal to continue to carry out combined strikes against Ukraine.
"Here, the different speeds allow him to do this at the expense of cheap weapons. Yes, they reduce the number and work of strategic aviation. But at the same time, they are actively starting to use the Iskander-K, where it takes 20 minutes to fly to Kyiv, and the Shahed jets. Therefore, yes, strategic aviation is dying in the Russian Federation, but Russia has found a replacement," Khrapchinsky added.
The commander of the reconnaissance unit of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Denis Yaroslavsky said that the Russian occupiers are modernizing the "Shaheds" and plan to increase its warhead. Now the enemy uses a warhead of 50-55 kilograms, but the occupiers are trying to increase it to 80-90 kilograms.
He also said that the occupiers are preparing to strike Ukraine’s energy infrastructure during the autumn-winter period. He noted that the occupiers’ goal may be to force civilians to leave the cities. "I think they will attack the energy sector. Now, don’t forget, it’s winter again. And when it gets cold, the heating season, they will attack the energy sector, the water utilities. I don’t want to scare anyone, but the enemy really is acting like a terrorist. And he understands that it is only possible to strategically devastate a city, say Kharkov, by completely knocking out the energy sector. The government should also be prepared for this," he said. As reported, Russia is planning to expand its use of occupied Ukrainian territory to launch drone strikes against Ukraine, in particular, it plans to use the territory of Donetsk airport for this purpose. Analysts at the Institute for the Study of War note that satellite images of the airport taken in July 2025 show that Russian authorities have partially cleared fortifications on the runway and have begun construction work on the parking lots, possibly in preparation for the installation of fuel tanks.
