Sabotage on Italian Oil Pipeline Disrupts Oil Supplies to Germany

An act of sabotage against critical infrastructure was reported in northern Italy, temporarily disrupting operations on an oil pipeline used to supply fuel to Germany.

This was reported by the German publication WELT.

The incident occurred in late March and led to a temporary halt in crude oil supplies via the Transalpine Pipeline (TAL).

As a result, Germany’s largest oil refinery in the Karlsruhe area did not receive raw materials for several days and was forced to operate using reserve stocks.

Additionally, according to the publication, the disruptions affected another oil refinery in Bavaria, which was forced to compensate for the shortage using internal reserves.

The cause of the pipeline outage was damage to the power supply system of a pumping station near Terzo di Tolmezzo in the Italian Alps. The shutdown of the pipeline was the result of an act of sabotage. German authorities were informed of the incident by the Italian side.

German law enforcement agencies, in cooperation with the Italian side, are investigating the circumstances of the incident.

The German Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) has already been brought in to assist with the investigation. It has not yet been determined whether this was a politically motivated attack on critical infrastructure.

As a reminder, a recent series of arson attacks in France damaged electrical infrastructure and caused disruptions at defense companies.

As a result, more than 3,000 households were left without power, including defense industry companies MBDA and KNDS, which manufacture, among other things, ammunition, shells, and Caesar artillery systems.
