Moscow and Tehran have signed a confidential deal for the supply of Russian Verba man-portable air defense systems to İran. Russia committed to delivering 500 launchers and 2,500 9M336 missiles to Iran. Financial Times says that Iran agreed a secret $589 million arms deal with Russia to acquire thousands of advanced shoulder-fired missiles like Verba MANPADS. This deal appears particularly toxic against the backdrop of the bitter standoff between Iran and the United States. Moscow is effectively strengthening the military capabilities of a country that Trump views as a key adversary. Against this backdrop, any attempt by the Kremlin to portray itself as a "negotiating party" appears downright cynical. The situation could irritate Donald Trump. Given the complex nature of relations around Ukraine, such actions by Moscow could easily be perceived in the United States as a direct attack on American interests. In Washington’s political logic, such moves often result in harsh retaliatory measures, and in this case, the blow might not fall on Tehran at all. Verba MANPADS are considered among the most advanced Russian systems of this class. They are designed to engage low-flying targets, including drones and cruise missiles, and the system’s mobility allows for the creation of a dispersed air defense system without relying on fixed radars. This effectively represents a significant enhancement of tactical defense.
Amid news of the deal, the American military presence in the region has sharply increased. Robert Pape estimates that the US has amassed up to half of all air power deployed worldwide near Iran. Axios reports that a new round of talks is being prepared, while The New York Times reports that Tehran is considering possible strike scenarios. Student protests are again being reported in the country.
US has significantly increased the number of fighter aircraft at bases in Jordan and Saudi Arabia this month, as it assembles tremendous air power in the Middle East for a potential weeks-long military campaign against Iran, informs the. President Donald Trump has threatened to strike Iran unless the regime swiftly meets his demands for a deal aimed at curbing Tehran’s nuclear programme. He said the Islamic republic had a "maximum" of 15 days to reach a deal with the US or "bad things will happen." The air and naval deployments amount to one of the largest build-ups in the region since the 2003 invasion of Iraq.
Satellite imagery shows aircraft numbers have climbed this month at the Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan. A Tel Aviv University tracker estimates at least 66 fighter jets are at the base. Eighteen of the jets visible in the imagery are F-35s – the world’s most advanced fighter jet – according to two former defence officials and an air force expert who reviewed the images. Also present are 17 F-15s and eight A-10s, the air force expert said. EA-18 electronic warfare aircraft and cargo planes have also been spotted at Muwaffaq Salti by satellites.
Satellite images also show an increase in jets at the Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia. An air force expert identified E-3 airborne warning and control system planes and C-130 and C-5 transport aircraft there. In June last year, US forces struck Iran’s three main nuclear sites as the country joined Israel’s military campaign against Iran. President Donald Trump said Iran’s key nuclear facilities were destroyed in the attack. However, according to a preliminary US intelligence assessment at the time, the US airstrikes did not destroy Iran’s nuclear capability and only set it back by a few months.
