Ukrainian pilots continue training in the UK to prepare for F-16 operations, Business Insider reports , revealing details of the training.
It is noted that during the multi-month training course at the Royal Air Force, Ukrainians learn English and undergo basic flight training. They are also taught to think like Western aviators, moving away from the Soviet mentality shaped by Sukhoi and MiG aircraft.
In addition, they are trying to wean Ukrainian pilots away from the tightly controlled flying style common in the Air Force before the war, giving them more room to make decisions. "We teach them to operate in a Western style," explained Squadron Leader Tom, the program’s chief flight instructor.
According to Tom, Ukrainians demonstrate solid aircraft handling skills after arriving at the Royal Air Force course thanks to their experience. However, their mentality is "very different" from what a NATO trainee might bring to the pilot program.
"At home, they’re given a lot of direction and told what to do—take off, fly to this location, perform this exercise, return home, and land. We teach them how to take off, choose where to fly, and manage their own combat mission," he noted.
More than 50 Ukrainian pilots have reportedly completed a basic English language and entry-level flying course in the UK designed to prepare them for more advanced F-16 training.
Instructors cite the language barrier as one of the key challenges during training. That’s why the Royal Air Force course is designed to help pilots improve their English proficiency and smooth the transition to advanced aircraft training. Earlier, Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov announced that Ukraine would receive additional F-16 fighter jets and spare parts from Belgium and Spain. He also stated that the countries had agreed to provide Kyiv with €1 billion in aid each.
Fedorov also announced that Ukraine has received mobile F-16 simulators, which pilots will use to improve their airborne interception performance. He added that this will also reduce the time between training and combat use of the aircraft. Ukrainian Air Force footage has, for the first time, revealed F-16 fighters intercepting Shahed-type attack drones using inexpensive APKWS II guided rockets, a development that could dramatically lower the cost of defending against large-scale drone attacks. Based on flight characteristics, targeting behavior, and interface elements visible in the video, analysts referenced by Defense Express assess that the interception was most likely carried out using an APKWS II laser-guided rocket fired from a Ukrainian F-16. Ukrainian F-16s were first observed carrying AN/AAQ-33 targeting pods and APKWS II rockets in December 2025, but no confirmed combat footage has shown these weapons being used for aerial interception.
APKWS has already proven effective in ground-based air defense roles, a trend Defense Express has repeatedly analyzed, but this marks a significant evolution in air-to-air employment. The development carries major economic implications. Traditional air-to-air missiles such as AIM-9 or AIM-120 cost millions of dollars per shot. By contrast, recent contracts price APKWS II at roughly $30,000 to $31,000 per rocket.
