The situation on the front remains difficult due to the intensification of Russian offensive actions along almost the entire line of contact, stated Ukrainian Armed Forces Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrsky.
He stressed that despite the intensity of the attacks, the Defence Forces are holding their positions thanks to planning, innovative approaches and the use of weapons. "As a result, the enemy suffers losses that exceed its ability to replenish its units," the Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces emphasized. Syrsky also noted that strikes on Russian production facilities weaken the enemy’s capabilities, Glavred media outlet recalls.
"The enemy is already experiencing a shortage of missiles to counter Ukrainian unmanned aerial systems and weapons," he concluded. Ruslan Granit Gabinet, commander of the 5th Separate Heavy Mechanized Brigade, told Radio Liberty that the Defense Forces were able to stop the most active phase of the Russian offensive.
According to him, strengthening of defensive capabilities and preparation of conditions for a possible counteroffensive are currently underway. He identified the rotation of personnel as the key problem:
"We need to replace those people who sit in their positions for 200 days. This affects the resilience of the infantryman’s defense. We also need to set up additional positions," he noted. At the same time, the brigade commander emphasized the shortage of personnel for the new positions. He also reported cases of unauthorized abandonment of the unit.
"The existing personnel in the army weren’t performing their tasks because they were ‘migrating’ from reserve battalion to reserve battalion, awaiting transfer to their desired unit. This meant that no one had any personnel—they were there, but they weren’t," he explained. Oles Maliarevich, deputy head of the Achilles unmanned systems brigade, told Den.Live that the so-called "kill zone" on the front is already 10-20 kilometers wide and continues to expand.
"The Kilzone will expand, and soon there will be nothing living left there at all," he said. According to him, dense mining and drones make movement in this area virtually impossible. He also suggested that the kill zone could extend up to 40 kilometers to the rear. Brigadier General Vasyl Sirotenko, Chief of the Engineering Troops of the Ukrainian Armed Forces Support Forces Command, told that Ukraine is creating a new line of defense from the Kyiv Reservoir to Sumy. According to him, Sumy has already become a powerful defensive hub.
"In a short period of time, we’ve managed to develop a truly layered and resilient defense. This is being noted, it’s visible, and it’s even visible from space. You can see it being built in real time," Sirotenko said. He added that the defensive line should prevent a breakthrough from the northern direction and the creation of buffer zones.
The development of underground military infrastructure is also being considered:
"Today, we’re not just talking about the 20 kilometers along the frontline. This extends to distances of up to 100 kilometers. These are the main logistics routes and routes for not only military convoys, but also for state logistics in general. And I think that soon, in a very short time, we’ll be talking about tunnels like the underground tunnels our troops use to provide logistical access to their positions, evacuate the wounded, and so on," he said.
