Urainian troops have achieved their biggest territorial advances in over two years, following a major disruption to Russian battlefield coordination caused by the loss of access to the Starlink network, according to recent reporting. This setback significantly weakened Russia’s ability to manage forces and operate drones effectively, creating an opening that allowed Kyiv to shift toward offensive actions in certain sectors, especially in southern Ukraine where Russian momentum had previously been building. An analysis by The Wall Street Journal, based on interviews with Ukrainian servicemen and military experts, found that the change in communications capability played a crucial role in altering frontline dynamics. When Russian units lost Starlink connectivity in February, their access to live battlefield feeds and secure communications was severely compromised. The system, operated by SpaceX under Elon Musk, had been restricted to authorized users, effectively cutting off Russian forces while maintaining Ukrainian access. Without this system, Russian troops were forced to rely on outdated and less reliable communication methods. One Ukrainian soldier remarked that the situation pushed Russian units back to a level of coordination reminiscent of Cold War-era practices. In the aftermath, Ukrainian forces managed to reclaim around 400 square kilometers of territory in the Zaporizhzhia and Dnipropetrovsk regions – marking their most notable gains on home soil in more than two years. Oleksandr Syrskyi, commander-in-chief of Ukraine’s armed forces, had already indicated similar figures earlier. February also became the first month since 2023 in which Ukraine regained more land than it lost, according to open-source assessments. At the same time, Volodymyr Zelenskyy cautioned against directly linking these gains solely to the communications disruption. He noted that the southern offensive had already been underway weeks before Russia’s Starlink access was curtailed. Despite Ukraine’s progress, Russia still retains broader advantages, particularly in troop numbers and overall resources. One immediate effect observed on the front lines was a sharp decline in the intensity and responsiveness of Russian drone operations. Ukrainian soldiers reported that previously, even small units detected by Russian surveillance would quickly come under heavy attack. After the communications breakdown, however, delays in relaying information between reconnaissance units and drone operators created exploitable gaps. Ukrainian forces also began intercepting more Russian radio traffic, as the adversary units increasingly relied on unsecured communications. In some cases, Ukrainian intelligence units could hear instructions and even anticipate movements well in advance. This allowed them to carry out targeted counterattacks, including strikes against rear positions using small, mobile groups. The disruption further undermined command and control within Russian ranks. Before losing Starlink, commanders had been able to closely monitor their units and coordinate maneuvers in real time. Without it, many frontline soldiers were left operating with limited guidance and situational awareness, effectively isolating them. Military experts like Michael Kofman have noted that while Russia is adapting with improvised solutions like mesh networks, Starlink has offered a uniquely effective and affordable capability that is difficult to replace. Additional complications have emerged from internal disagreements over which communication platforms to use, further hindering coordination at lower tactical levels.
