At Cape Tarkhankut in annexed Crimea, the Southern Defense Forces of Ukraine destroyed an expensive Russian radar complex, recently. Its stations could detect missiles and drones at a range of up to 600 kilometers, but now the peninsula’s air defense from the western direction is exposed.
“ İn Crimea, a special unit of the National Guard of Ukraine, in cooperation with the 73rd Naval Center of Special Operations Forces, carried out a high-precision special operation using sea platforms and attack aircraft,” reports the Ukrainian military telegram channel DroneBomber .
It is claimed that three extremely important targets were destroyed at once: RLM-M 55Zh6M "Nebo-M" – 1 unit; RLM-D 55Zh6M "Nebo-M" – 1 unit; KU radar 55Zh6M "Nebo-M" – 1 unit.
The Telegram channel "Krymskiy Veter" later published a video of the destruction of radar stations near the village of Mayak on Cape Tarkhankut, noting that the Russian radar complex "Nebo-M" worth about 100 million dollars was hit. A military expert from Crimea, a former Ukrainian officer, and a lieutenant colonel in the reserve of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, spoke to Krym.Realii on condition of anonymity about the importance of defeating such radar stations.
"Each radar module is a multifunctional three-coordinate radar based on an active solid-state phased antenna array. The peculiarity of the radar complex is that the radars of different ranges included in it do not operate independently, but in adaptive interaction, which allows combining the advantages of these ranges and obtaining a unique set of tactical and technical characteristics: significant detection ranges for all types of targets, inherent in the long-wave range, and high-precision measurement of coordinates in the short-wave range," the expert says.
The retired lieutenant colonel notes the long range of target detection – up to 600 kilometers, which allows the Nebo-M radar system to solve not only air defense but also missile defense tasks.
"For example, from Cape Tarkhankut to Kyiv and Kharkov in the north, as well as Kamenets-Podolsky in the northwest, it is 590 kilometers, to Severodonetsk in the northeast – 600 kilometers. That is, two-thirds of Ukraine, including the occupied territories, are covered by the zone of action of this radar complex," notes the reserve officer of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
According to him, the disabling of such an important component of anti-missile and anti-aircraft defense creates not just a “hole” in radar coverage, but a real “corridor” for Ukrainian drones and missiles in the direction of annexed Crimea. "And considering that just a few days ago in Saki the radar stations "Niobiy-SV" and "Protivnik-GE" were destroyed, performing the same functions and operating at the same ranges, we can assume that Crimea is not covered from the western and northwestern directions for some time. And this opens a window of opportunity for the Ukrainian Defense Forces," says a military expert from Crimea.
