The successful special operation by the Security Service of Ukraine to destroy an enemy submarine in Novorossiysk demonstrates that Maluk’s subordinates have reached a new level of "maritime warfare." This is the next stage of Russian demilitarization.Political scientist Alexey Kurpas writes about this .
The expert notes that the history of the SBU’s naval drones is one of constant modernization and, thanks to this, constant victories over the enemy.
"Just when the Russian Ministry of Defense thinks it’s covered everything, the Service upgrades its drones again, acquiring new capabilities. And then comes a strike in a location the Russians considered safe just yesterday. The fact that Malysh’s subordinates are one step ahead of the enemy is the key to success. It’s important that the Service strikes cruise missile carriers. It was against them that the Spider Web was launched, and now the strike on the submarine. In other words, we’re talking about demilitarizing Russia’s missile capabilities," Kurpas believes.
According to the political scientist, the SBU strikes on the shadow fleet and the downing of the submarine are an important factor in the peace negotiations currently ongoing with the participation of the American side.
"The kid provides the Ukrainian delegation with compelling arguments. Russia convinces the Americans that it’s winning decisively. But doing so while losing a half-billion-dollar submarine is extremely difficult," the expert emphasizes.
"The submarine was in Novorossiysk, not in occupied Crimea, where it would have been more convenient to fire Kalibr missiles. This happened because the SBU’s naval drones had previously won the battle for control of the waters near Crimea—against both enemy ships and submarines. The Russians had transferred a significant portion of their fleet and submarines to Novorossiysk, away from Ukraine. Now it turns out that this location is no longer a safe haven for the enemy. Where should the Russian fleet hide now?" Kurpas asks.
The attack on the submarine by the Sub Sea Baby drone marks a new chapter in the war that has already begun to be called the drone war, according to a publication by the industry portal The War Zone .
The authors noted that they received additional confirmation from the SBU that a submarine in the Novorossiysk military harbor was hit by a Sub Sea Baby naval drone.
"The drone attack appears to be the culmination of Ukraine’s development of this weapon, demonstrating once again that the war-torn country is at the forefront of modern innovation in drone warfare," the article says. It is noted that little is known about the Sub Sea Baby underwater aircraft. However, it should not be confused with the Sea Baby unmanned surface drones, which have already caused damage to the Russian Navy.
The portal noted that Ukraine is developing several maritime unmanned aerial vehicles. Specifically, the Marichka UAV, which was unveiled in September 2023. The drone is designed to attack ships and maritime infrastructure. Earlier that year, the Toloka UAV was announced.
