Mojtaba Khamenei, Iran’s newly installed supreme leader, is said to be in critical condition after reportedly sustaining injuries during joint US–Israeli strikes. According to a diplomatic communication cited by The Times, the 56-year-old cleric has fallen unconscious and is undergoing treatment for what is described as a serious medical condition in the holy city of Qom. This marks the first reported disclosure of the supreme leader’s whereabouts. Mojaba was injured in the same strike that killed his father, Ali Khamenei, Iran’s 87-year-old former Supreme leader, along with several senior officials, on the first day of the war on February 28. Located roughly 140 kilometers south of Tehran, Qom holds deep religious significance in Shia Islam and serves as the spiritual center of the Islamic Republic. The memo further states that Mojtaba Khamenei remains in a grave state and is effectively unable to participate in governing decisions. The document is believed to draw on intelligence assessments from the United States and Israel, which were reportedly shared with regional allies in the Gulf. Sources suggest that the US American and Israeli intelligence services had long been aware of his location, though this information had not been disclosed publicly until now. Since being designated as his father’s successor last month, Khamenei is reported to have issued directives and authored statements that were delivered to the public through state media presenters. “I assure everyone that we will not refrain from avenging the blood of your martyrs,” the supreme leader supposedly said in his initial written statement on March 12. Meanwhile, preparations are reportedly underway in Qom for the burial of Ali Khamenei, who, according to the same report, was killed in the strikes on February 28. The city is widely regarded as the center of Shia clerical authority, making it a significant site for such funeral arrangements. Mojtaba Khamenei was named the successor of Ali Khaemenei, whose death created a sudden leadership vacuum in Iran’s political system. However, the transition has been marked by uncertainty and ongoing regional tensions linked to the conflict that led to the assassination.
