Sweden to Spend SEK 3.5 Billion on Counter-Drone Systems

Sweden will invest SEK 3.5 billion ($367 million) in expanding its counter-drone capabilities between 2026 and 2028.

Sweden’s Minister of Defence, Pål Jonson, shared this announcement on Friday on the social media platform X.

The investment includes weapons to shoot down drones, counter-UAV protection systems for air bases, and electronic warfare (EW) equipment for both soldiers and vehicles.

“This will significantly strengthen our defense capabilities,” emphasized the head of the defense ministry.

In addition, Sweden will allocate over SEK 1.5 billion to enhance its combat aviation capabilities, including the procurement of spare parts, equipment, and materials.

“Recent airspace violations and drone sightings serve as a reminder that aerial threats are an increasingly important aspect of modern warfare,” Jonson noted.

During the night of September 25th, a suspicious drone was spotted over the eastern part of the Karlskrona archipelago in Sweden. It was observed just a few kilometers from the naval base in Karlskrona.

The police have opened a case for violation of aviation regulations, as well as launched an investigation under the law concerning the protection of restricted sites.
