Sweden to Supply Ukraine with Archer Self-Propelled Howitzer Barrels

The Swedish government will allocate funds for the delivery of new barrels for Archer self-propelled howitzers to Ukraine.

Swedish Defense Minister Pål Jonson announced this on X (formerly Twitter).

In addition, other weapons and equipment for military logistics support will also be provided.

“The government has made the decision to allocate SEK 1.5 billion from support packages 18 & 19 towards new military abilities for Ukraine. It consists of over 10 new Archer artillery barrels, long-range strike and underwater capabilities, as well as more logistical support,” Jonson stated.

The Minister claimed that the 155mm Archer artillery systems have demonstrated high effectiveness on the battlefield in Ukraine and now require new barrels.

In addition, according to him, trucks from Volvo and Scania will be purchased, along with a new container system for faster and safer unloading of defense equipment.

Archer in Ukraine

Sweden decided to provide Ukraine with Archer self-propelled howitzers in January 2023 as part of one of its military aid packages. In November of the same year, soldiers of the 45th Artillery Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine showcased the system.

Ukrainian defenders are actively using the Archer self-propelled howitzers on the front lines, particularly for counter-battery warfare.

The Swedish wheeled systems have also been integrated into the arsenal of the 43rd Artillery Brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

This howitzer can fully deploy in just 20 seconds. All preparatory processes for firing, as well as the firing itself, are fully automated and controlled from the cabin.

In March 2025, Militarnyi reported that Sweden had signed a contract for the production and supply of 18 more Archer self-propelled howitzers and 5 ARTHUR counter-battery radars to Ukraine.

The value of the deal is approximately $300 million and is part of the 18th package of Swedish military assistance.
