Growing concerns about Russia’s possible deployment of nuclear weapons in space are forcing the United States and its allies to accelerate the development of satellite defense systems and prepare for a potential conflict in orbit, Forbes writes. Space security expert Victoria Samson of the Secure World Foundation emphasized that increasing evidence points to the modernization of Russia’s anti-satellite systems. Of particular concern is the Russian Nudol system, which could be adapted to carry a nuclear warhead. If detonated in low Earth orbit, it could generate a powerful electromagnetic pulse and destroy a large number of satellites. According to researchers, such an explosion could not only disable orbital infrastructure but also pose a mortal threat to space station crews. After the White House classified such developments as a high-level threat, the US Department of Defense intensified work on countermeasure systems. Specifically, they are considering adapting existing missile defense systems, such as Aegis, to destroy enemy satellites. In addition, the US is working on a large-scale anti-missile shield project, the Golden Dome, which could include orbital interceptors to destroy missiles at launch.
Experts estimate that the cost of creating such a system could range from hundreds of billions to several trillion dollars over two decades. Analysts warn that the deployment of space-based defense systems could spark a new arms race and make orbit even more vulnerable in the event of escalation. Satellite networks, in particular the SpaceX system and its Starlink project, which provides communications, including in Ukraine, are also named among Russia’s potential targets. Even a single nuclear explosion in space could disable thousands of satellites and paralyze global communications. Against this backdrop, Washington is not ruling out harsh response scenarios – from intercepting launches to preemptive action against infrastructure. As reported, Russia plans to deploy nuclear weapons in space, which, if detonated, could cause global chaos by disabling 80% of satellites. Essentially, Russia could create a "space Pearl Harbor." General Stephen Whiting, head of the US Space Command, stated that America is "very concerned" about the Kremlin’s plans. It is noted that Russia’s plans are part of the escalating aggression in space that has been observed since the start of the war in Ukraine. "Russia remains a highly developed space power and continues to invest in counterspace weapons. They plan to launch nuclear anti-satellite weapons into orbit, which will pose a threat to all satellites in low-Earth orbit," the general explained. In addition to the devastating blow to military intelligence and targeting systems, the detonation of this weapon would knock out a significant portion of the world’s civilian satellite communications for internet and mobile phones, as well as GPS services. It’s been called a "space Pearl Harbor." "The problem with GPS jamming is that it’s done in a way that impacts civil aviation in Eastern and Southern Europe. When we endanger civilian aircraft full of people simply trying to travel for business or pleasure, that’s extremely problematic. We don’t want that to become the norm," the American general noted, commenting on Russia’s actions. According to him, the space sector has changed dramatically over the past decade. China and Russia are currently developing a suite of combat space weapons. But despite Russia’s actions, China remains the United States’ largest competitor in space.
