Russia is preparing to replace the governor of the frontline Belgorod region. Vyacheslav Gladkov, who has held the post since 2021, has been offered a trip to occupied Abkhazia. The pro-government Russian newspaper Vedomosti reported this on April 30, citing sources in the Kremlin.
Sources claim that Gladkov was offered a de facto "exile"—the position of ambassador to the unrecognized Abkhazia. However, this is likely not the worst-case scenario for Gladkov, given that his immediate circle has been subject to criminal prosecution. The arrests of Gladkov’s close associates and deputies began in June 2025 and continued until the end of the year. The key figures are Vice Governor Rustem Zainullin and Deputy Governor Vladimir Bazarov. There were persistent rumors that the governor himself might end up behind bars. But he managed to avoid that fate, apparently with the help of his influential patron, Sergei Kiriyenko. Gladkov had recently expressed criticism of the so-called "SVO" and the strengthening of censorship in Russia. This likely led to his resignation. Russian political strategist Abbas Gallyamov commented on the information . He published the words of his "very well-informed" source regarding the reasons for Gladkov’s impending resignation. "He’s [has become] annoying, asking everyone for air defense and demanding that they do something to stop the Belgorod region from sitting without power, money, doctors, teachers, and under constant attack… Also, despite the horror unfolding, the NKVD is arresting his employees one after another as part of the Great Terror. He says outright: you’re deploying your bad MAKS, but how am I supposed to inform residents about shelling if it’s not working? According to the source, the governor is currently a witness in a high-profile case involving embezzlement during the construction of fortifications. Several of his protégés have already been arrested, including several deputies. The regional governor could also have been a suspect, but escaped prosecution thanks to his high-ranking patron, Kremlin oligarch Roman Abramovich. "Gladkov has been under attack for over a year, practically since the start of the investigation into embezzlement during the construction of fortifications… When things really started to get heated, Gladkov rushed to Abramovich’s residence… The oligarch used all his connections to put out the fire… Now the embezzlement issue has returned again," the channel reported. According to him, Gladkov could lose his post within the next five months. It’s worth noting that one of the key figures in the fortification case was former Kursk Region Governor Roman Starovoit. He was found dead in July 2025.
