A ship carrying fuel and natural gas continues to drift in the Mediterranean Sea after a drone attack. According to The New York Times, a second rescue operation to address the aftermath failed, and the vessel is completely out of control.
The publication reports that an attempt to tow the Russian tanker Arctic Metagaz, adrift in the Mediterranean Sea, failed on Wednesday. At the time, the vessel was drifting approximately 120 nautical miles north of Benghazi, Libya. The Libyan Ports and Maritime Authority reported that the towline snapped while attempting to move the vessel. In a statement, officials said the tanker poses a "significant environmental and navigational hazard."
Libyan maritime authorities have urged all vessels to stay at least five nautical miles from the drifting tanker and to report any leaks or other emergencies. Senior Italian official Alfredo Mantovano also called the situation "an environmental time bomb that threatens to cause serious damage to the entire Mediterranean Sea."
As a reminder, the crew abandoned the tanker after a drone attack in early March. It was carrying at least 700 tons of fuel and a "significant quantity of natural gas." It was likely attacked southeast of Malta.
Aerial photographs show a hole in the hull. This has raised alarm among international government and maritime officials, who fear a potential environmental disaster from gas or fuel leaks. The vessel is believed to be part of Russia’s "shadow fleet," operating in violation of European and American sanctions. According to the online ship registry, the vessel’s name was changed last year.
Russia accused Ukraine of attacking the tanker. Ukraine did not comment on the statement. This was the first attack on a tanker carrying liquefied natural gas. And, according to experts, it dealt a serious blow to Russia because vessels of this type are more expensive than standard fuel tankers. It should be added that the Europeans plan to increase pressure on Russia’s "shadow fleet ." According to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, this will help cut off Russia’s sources of war financing. Russian warships began escorting tankers. One such ship was spotted in the North Sea, off the coast of Great Britain. Security experts believe the ship could be used as a mobile base for armed groups that could escort Russian oil tankers and prevent them from being intercepted by British forces. Thus, in the event of an attempt to board ships under sanctions, there is a risk of direct confrontation between the crews. In March, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated that London was prepared to intercept tankers from the Russian "shadow fleet" as they passed through the English Channel.
At the same time, to date, not a single such ship has been captured by British forces, although similar operations have already been carried out by the United States, France and Germany. A Royal Air Force Boeing Poseidon patrol aircraft and a military helicopter were observed over the area at the time of the incident.
